NOTE:messages highlight or add to the information already stated in the regular text.
IMPORTANT: messages provide information that is important to be aware of to properly perform a procedure or use equipment.
CAUTION: messages alert the reader to situations that may cause damage to the vehicle or equipment.
WARNING: messages mean that damage to the vehicle or equipment will occur unless the stated situation is avoided or appropriate steps are taken.
DANGER: messages tell the reader that serious bodily injury to an individual and/or serious equipment damage will occur unless the situation is avoided or appropriate steps are taken.
The usual road safety conventions apply to driving your Sparrow, just like an ordinary car. However, as an electric vehicle, powered by a 156-volt battery pack and recharging at a 110-volt or 220-volt electrical outlet, the Sparrow has an increased potential of electrical hazard that can cause injury to you and seriously damage the vehicle.
General
Read The Sparrow Operator's Handbook. Keep it with your Sparrow for easy reference. Contact your authorized Sparrow dealer if you have questions or need additional information.

Become familiar with the E-Meter on the dashboard. Learn how to use it and check it often when driving your Sparrow.

Be aware of ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD

  1. Do not touch any electrical components directly or with an object under the hood, under the seat battery compartment or under the controller access cover in the back of the vehicle.
  2. Do not remove the battery pack cover. Do not touch the batteries or any part of the battery pack. Only trained technicians or authorized Sparrow representatives should have access to the battery pack.
  3. Ensure that the voltage rating of the electrical source (outlet) is the same as the voltage rating printed on the nameplate on the top of battery pack charger.

Understand the rules of the road and follow them. Know the safe motorcycle driving conventions for your state.

Allow only an authorized Sparrow dealer to perform all adjustments and maintenance on your Sparrow.

Driving
  • Use the driver safety restraint belt. Buckle up every time you drive your Sparrow.
  • When you start up your Sparrow, check the E-Meter for the battery pack state-of-charge and the system voltage. The voltage reading should never be below 135 volts.
  • Do not move the forward/reverse switch until your Sparrow is completely stopped.
  • Drive defensively and be alert to vehicles around you. You may not always be in other drivers fields of vision.
  • Do not drive your Sparrow in excess of 60 mph (even though the speedometer indicates 85 mph).
  • Do not make abrupt turns or maneuvers in your Sparrow.
  • Accelerate gradually. Press your foot on the accelerator pedal gently and smoothly.
  • Be mindful of weather, road, and traffic conditions and drive accordingly.
  • Curb-park your Sparrow, turning the front wheels into the curb.
Breaking-In
  • For the first 50 cycles, break in the battery pack by gradually increasing your driving distance after each charge.
  • During the first 500 miles, break in the brush motor by accelerating gradually. Sudden or fast acceleration can cause arcing and motor damage.
